Hello there. I’m Dr. Shelly Asbee, one of the obstetricians and gynecologists here at Academy Women’s Health Associates. Today I’m going to talk with you about overall personal wellness.
Overall personal wellness entails helping a women make active choices and optimizing their lifestyle to reaching their highest overall wholeness and wellbeing.
Three Aspects of Personal Wellness
There are multiple models for wellness, and with multiple aspects. The three aspects I’m going to share with you are:
- Physical Aspect
- Emotional Aspect
- Spiritual Aspect
As far as the physical aspect goes, there are several components.
The one you would think of automatically when coming to a physician’s office, or course, is the physical exam.
The physical exam is a key part of the annual exam, and the components vary based on the patient’s age, risk factors, and the physician’s preferences.
Most women who come for an exam here at OB/GYN office will have a breast exam and a pelvic exam. We’ll also talk with you about PAP smears, mammograms, colonoscopies, bone density scans, lab work and anything else you have questions or concerns about.
The next component of physical wellness is addressing your medical concerns.
So here in our OB/GYN offices that would entail primarily fibroids, painful menses, heavy menses, contraception, menopausal concerns, eating disorders, and of course, anything else you have questions or concerns about.
The next component of physical wellness is general fitness.
This entails weight management, diet counseling and physical activity.
As far as weight goes, we do use the BMI, though we know it’s not perfect, in helping us determine if a women is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
BMI is calculated using weight in kilograms over height and meters squared.
With the obesity epidemic here in the United States we do take weight assessment very seriously.
We know that uterine cancer is five times more common in obese women as opposed to non-obese women.
We know that losing weight can reduce your LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and your blood sugar. We also know that losing weight can reduce your risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, uterine, breast, and colon cancer later in life.
Multi-Focused Approach To Weight Management
When we address weight in general, we take a multi focused approached looking at nutrition, activity, and behavioral therapy.
As far as nutrition goes, we can talk with you specifically about what you’re taking in, the time of day you’re taking it in, and we can refer you to a nutrition, nutritionist if deemed necessary.
As far as activity goes, we want to make sure that you have both an aerobic and a muscle strengthening component to that.
Activity is important because not only does it help you lose weight, it also increases your metabolism and gives you more energy just on a day-to-day basis, and helps you maintain your bone density.
And then the third component of how we address weight is behavioral therapy, addressing behavioral components. So again, helping determine are there any barriers or any triggers or any patterns that we can help you modify in regards to your eating and your activity.
Back to the overall physical wellness component. Two other things we like to address here, one is smoking cessation. And again, we can counsel you on that, prescribe medications, or refer as needed.
And the other one is sleeping hygiene, which we can all use help on as far as how much we sleep, bedtime routines and such.
The second aspect of personal wellness that I’m going to talk briefly with you about today is emotional wellness.
When we look at emotional wellness, this deals with how do you handle your day-to-day stressors, so stress management.
Do you have any concerns or questions about anxiety or depression?
We can talk with you specifically about these concerns. Of course we can offer medical management or counseling, and we can refer as needed.
And then the third component I’m going to talk briefly as far as personal wellness goes, is the spiritual wellness.
Here at Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates we are very comfortable with talking with our patients about their unique spiritual needs and development.
We will answer questions and concerns as we can, and of course, refer out or make any recommendations that we feel will be appropriate for you as well.
